While there is some debate on where our military should drop its bombs around the world, there is much more unanimity here in the States where American culture drops its bombs, especially when it comes to sex.
On the scale of China sexual evolution, Hooters lands somewhere between a wink and a smile. Unthinkable two decades ago, the restaurant promotes a playful kind of sexuality different from the country seedy massage parlors and hostess bars, and yes, it serves the chain famous wings too.
The restaurant may be another example of globalization in China, but it also a snapshot of changing attitudes toward sex in a country full of contradictions. Gone are the days when public displays of affection were frowned upon, although selected things remain offlimits.
Pornography is strictly prohibited. A government campaign last year netted 5,000 arrests for distributing porn online. The crackdown even extended to dirty jokes sent to cellphones. Often disguised as hair salons, they remain one of the most common sights in any city, operating unabated next door to businesses and schools without the slightest fuss from locals.
"In terms of sex, China has these really competing views, socially and personally," said James Farrer, a professor at Sophia University in Tokyo who has studied sex in China. "What Hooters does is give a new model. . . . It an almost familystyle restaurant. It clean. It very far removed from the salacious commercial sex that is rampant in China."
The Beijing Hooters, one of three in China, sits on the second level of a renovated block of restaurants and shops, above a French bakery. But one doesn have to look far to find contrasts.
So what is the right or correct path China should be following in the sexual revolution? What is the sexual revolution, or any sexual revolution, for that matter? It an adaptation of "morals" to serve the interests of the "culture" or "society". What is correct and what is culture is very flexible, although some people seem to believe that these things were somehow fixed in stone on Mount Sinai and are willing to stone anyone to keep the universe in order. It was, and still is, very threatening to those who were aligned with the patriarchal rules of engagement.
With the invention of AIDS (and I not really joking here) the pace of the sexual revolution slowed down quite a bit. The world has seemed to be in a state of disequalibrium since then when it comes to sex. People don quite jump in and out of beds like the good ol days, but the divine opprobrium just doesn carry the same weight. And as might be expected, changes in culture/society tend to change what can and can do in bed.
So China has been touched by Western capitalism. Inundated, really. Women fertility in urban, educated areas has been delayed so that they can extend their education. In rural regions women fertility has been delayed and curtailed because China leadership has been actively working to stop China population growth. As a result boys, more prized than daughters, are more likely to be born and survive in China, whether through selective abortion or some other cause.
Workers flood the cities to work in factories. Western businessmen visit those factories. And there aren so many women around. It like the Gold Rush on an epic scale. And yet China has a traditional, patriarchal society underneath it all.
Well, expect changes. I expect a lot of horny men in Beijing and Shanghai, and sex will be expressing itself one way or another. wings isn the only coming to China.
